Nagaland observes ‘World Blood Donor Day’

Kohima: The Voluntary Blood Donor’s Association Kohima (VBDAK), in partnership with Nagaland Institute of Medical Science & Research (NIMSR), commemorated World Blood Donor’s Day at NIMSR Centre in Kohima. The event featured various activities and a blood donation camp.

Dr. Soumya Chakraborty, Director cum Dean of NIMSR, graced the occasion as the special guest. In her address, she emphasized the absence of side effects from blood donation and shared her personal experience of donating blood 22 times. She highlighted the health benefits for donors, suggesting they are less likely to suffer from blood-related ailments.

Dr. Avila Sangtam, Medical Officer from the Blood Center NHAK, underscored the critical need for voluntary blood donations in hospitals, particularly for patients awaiting surgeries. She noted an encouraging trend of increasing participation in blood donation, acknowledging the potential to save numerous lives through these contributions.

The program was led by Sentimongla Tzudir, Executive member of VBDAK, with Ainato Yeptho, President of VBDAK, overseeing the felicitation and induction of Life Members. The event included a special performance by Nguvito Tsuipu and NIMSR students, a brief speech and pledge by Jentiren Jamir, and a vote of thanks delivered by Alipoker, Founding President of VBDAK.

In total, 41 volunteers generously donated blood during the event.

Acknowledgements and Special gratitude was also expressed to partnering agencies such as Nagaland Institute of Medical Science and Research, Blood Centre NHAK, Imprint, 13th Assam Rifles, Kohima, Little Star Bakery Kohima, Imagi.nation, 8N8 Restaurant, ete café. The event was organised with support from National Health Mission Nagaland, Nagaland State AIDS Control Society, VERTEX constructions, and Synergy Group.

Dimapur: In Dimapur, the event was jointly organized at Paul Bernick Auditorium by the Nagaland State Blood Transfusion Council (NSBTC), District Hospital Blood Bank, Dimapur (DHBBD), and Salesian College of Higher Education (SCHE).

During the brief program, Dr. Temsu, the in-charge of the District Hospital Blood Bank in Dimapur, highlighted the global significance of honoring and expressing gratitude to voluntary blood donors. He emphasized their selfless contributions in saving lives, without expecting anything in return, and commended them with respect and admiration.

Dr. Temsu underscored that the day served to raise broader awareness about the critical importance of voluntary blood donation. He encouraged more individuals to regularly donate blood, envisioning a future where ample blood supplies are available for patients across all regions of Nagaland.

Simultaneously, DHBBD organized a parallel program at Unity College and the Blood Bank at District Hospital Dimapur, in collaboration with regular donors and the Human Rights Help Association of Nagaland. Together, these efforts resulted in the collection of 82 units of blood.
